Terme qui caractérise les timbres-poste et les lettres du XIXème siècle.
En France, certains philatélistes limitent cette période à celle qui s’étend de 1849 à 1876, apparition du type Sage, d’autres englobent tout le XIXème siècle.
Cette période s’oppose à celle des semi-modernes, qui va approximativement jusqu’en 1940; viennent ensuite les « modernes ».
